40 year mayor

On Tuesday 6 March, with the help of colleagues and the Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Eve Keenan, we launched our 40 year anniversary celebrations. This day marked 40 years to the day since we first opened our doors to patients on 6 March 1978.

To highlight the fantastic work we do and how things have changed over the last 40 years, we were joined by many colleagues and teams from the Trust including Ear Care and Audiology, Radiology, Research, the UECC, Speech and Language Therapy, Post Graduate Medical Education, Dietetics, Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity, Estates and Facilities, Children’s Services and more.

The Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr Eve Keenan was at the event to help us mark this special occasion by cutting the anniversary cake, hearing about our services and visiting some of the Trust’s long-service colleagues in their place of work, including colleagues in Critical Care, Urology and Photopheresis. Pictured below is the Mayor with Derek Bainbridge, Nurse Consultant on ITU-HDU, who recently received his 40 years’ service award.

As part of the celebrations, the Mayor also kindly presented our Chairman, Martin Havenhand, with a Rotherham Coat of Arms to be displayed at the Trust.

Some of our long serving colleagues, who joined us at the event, were also interviewed by the Rotherham Advertiser, to share with the public how care has changed over the years. One of these colleagues included David Wilson, who can be seen below on the photo of the newly opened Radiology Unit (1978) and at the celebration event (2018).

We have also already received some fantastic old photos – do you recognise anyone in photos below?  Please continue to share with us any of you and your family’s memories of the hospital:

Have you got any special memories of Rotherham Hospital to share?
Did you work for us 40 years ago when we opened?
Have you or your family got any memories from when the NHS was launched in 1948?
Do you have any old photos to share?
