HCA Apprentices go over and above for local charities!

HCA Fundraising

This national Apprenticeship week (9-13 March) a team of inspirational young Health Care Assistant (HCA) apprentices have raised £342.18 for local charities.

Fifteen Rotherham College apprentices are training at Rotherham Hospital, part of The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, to become qualified HCAs and have bowled over hospital staff with their enthusiasm for supporting patients and with their willingness to learn.
Through a fundraising event at Rotherham Hospital this week the apprentices raised the cash for Rotherham Hospital Charity and for Autism Awareness on behalf of a local young boy with autism who is raising funds for an assistance dog.

As part of their roles and their placements at the Trust and college work, the team has signed up to the Brathay Challenge which aims to raise awareness of apprenticeships and sees 80 teams of nine apprentices from across England prove that they have the best team building, logistical, leadership and community skills needed to claim the title of the apprentice team of the year.
The team has also pledged to #Hellomynameis, a campaign introduced nationally by terminally ill registrar, Dr Kate Granger, who observed that many health professionals often fail to simply introduce themselves when giving treatment, making patients feel like a ‘piece of meat’ instead of individuals.

Emma Foster, HCA Apprentice, said: “We were inspired by Kate Granger’s campaign and we all really believe that patients deserve to treated with the greatest of respect.
“Greeting patients with #hellomynameis starts a conversation and helps build relationships with those in our care; it makes patients feel more human, makes them aware of who we are and gives us the chance to tell them all about the fabulous work we are doing training to be HCAs! – it really puts them at ease.”
