Married couple, Teresa Villa and Emiliano Hernandez are two of the Trust’s newly recruited nurses from Spain.

Through their commitment to nursing, Teresa and Emiliano met in their third and final year at University in Madrid. Their training to be a nurse in Spain involved front-line work from day one, through which nursing trainees gain a great depth of clinical experience.

In 2012, they travelled to Africa together to join a project in North Kenya. Together they started a health programme based in a small village centre, supporting many different villages within a tribe called Turkana. Teresa explained: “The two of us provided care for the villages from a mobile clinic. Young Spanish children would also come and help over the summer, some as young as 15 years old, supporting us with fundraising to keep the project going.”

Teresa continues: “My English was already well developed from my time in America and Ireland as a child. Emiliano learnt to speak English during our time in Africa.”

Following a family wedding in Spain and a traditional African wedding with the village tribe, the couple travelled to Spain for their Christmas vacation and on the same day, were invited to the interviews for staff nurse positions at the Trust. Only three days later, both Teresa and Emiliano were offered positions at Rotherham Hospital, and have now joined the teams on our Stroke and Gastroenterology Wards.

Emiliano said: “Rotherham is a big change from being in the desert in Africa! The role of the nurse is also quite different here compared with Spain and it is clear that there is a lot of support and help for anyone wishing to develop their skills further”.

Teresa added: “People in Rotherham are really nice and friendly, regularly offering to walk us to locations when we have asked for directions. We are very happy to be here and are looking forward to seeing what our time in Rotherham brings.”

Teresa and Emiliano are joined by nine other Spanish nurses at the Trust, each bringing a wealth of knowledge, experience and passion for the nursing role.

The Trust is still looking to recruit nurses. Whether you're a newly qualified nurse, working elsewhere or looking to return to practice, get in touch. Phone the HR recruitment team on 01709 424050 or email recruitment@rothgen.nhs.uk
