A group of 11 nurses from Spain have chosen to make the life-changing decision to move to Yorkshire and work with our local community based here at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust.
The Trust began a large scale recruitment drive late last year to drive up the numbers of full time nurses at the hospital and in our community services to ensure that staff could spend more time with patients and provide the personal care and attention patients deserve, which the Trust is always striving for.
The 11 are all qualified nurses with directly transferable skills. In addition, they will all undergo an intensive induction with our colleagues here at Rotherham Hospital, including an introduction to the Trust’s new #hellomynameis ethos, where all patients and visitors are greeted properly, following the successful introduction of the campaign started by Leeds’ doctor, Kate Granger MBE.
The Trust is far from being the first NHS organisation to seek overseas recruits. Many London and Home Counties hospitals have successfully recruited overseas nurses from Spain, Portugal and across Europe, as well as the Caribbean.
Trust Chief Nurse, Tracey McErlain-Burns, said: "I'm delighted to welcome our new nurses and I hope they get a good Yorkshire welcome from our staff and our patients.
“Recruiting nurses is a challenge, due to a national shortage of qualified and experienced nurses. All our nurses must sign up to our core values which were put forward and agreed by our staff: safe, compassion, together, right first time, responsible and respect."
The Trust is still looking to recruit nurses and welcomes nurses wanting to return to practice to work at Rotherham Hospital and in its community services.
Tracey McErlain-Burns added: "With around 4,500 staff we are one of the biggest employers in Rotherham. There are fewer places to work as rewarding and which offers such great benefits to its staff: the NHS offers 27 days' holiday, a generous pension, flexible working options and training and development opportunities."
