A doctor who worked at Rotherham Hospital for over 25 years has been acknowledged with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dr Peter Taylor, a Consultant Haematologist, started working at Rotherham Hospital in 1988 and went on to pioneer a number of services throughout his tenure. Peter established Rotherham’s clinical haematology service, led the laboratory services for almost 20 years and also developed a specialist photopheresis service for the treatment of rare immune diseases.

It is thanks to Peter’s pioneering treatment and collaborative approach with the UK Photopheresis Society that immunosuppressed patients – when the body’s immune response is reduced or absent – travel far and wide to be treated at Rotherham Hospital. In 2008, the department became the first of its kind to treat children in the UK.

Now retired, Dr Peter Taylor said: “I have been fortunate during my years at Rotherham to work with tremendously motivated and committed colleagues who have shared a determination to provide the best of patient care.”

Tracy Maher, Sister in Photopheresis at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust said: “In our opinion, no one deserves this award more than Dr Taylor. He is committed to sharing his knowledge with us and expanding the Photopheresis Service. He is approachable, available for advice and his enthusiasm for his chosen career is truly inspirational.”

Quoting a patient treated by Dr Taylor, Tracy added: “Dr Taylor is a credit to his profession and an ambassador for all that is good in the NHS.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dr Taylor by the Louise Barnett, Chief Executive of The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, as part of the organisation’s PROUD award scheme which recognises the fantastic achievements of staff members.
