Happy 70th Birthday to the NHS!

06 Jul 2018 17:40:13

On 5 July 1948, Aneurin Bevan, the then Minister for Health, launched the NHS in Park Hospital, Manchester (now Trafford General Hospital). Today, the 70th birthday of the NHS, colleagues throughout the Trust and across the country have been celebrating this much loved institution. This article summarises some of the events and activities that have been taking place at the Trust to mark the occasion.

Wednesday colleagues attended the NHS70 Celebration event hosted by the Rotherham CCG at New York Stadium. The event was combined with the CCG's AGM and provided a great opportunity to mark this special occasion with local partners and share our Operational Plan, successes and some of our history.

Yesterday began with lots of messages being shared from patients and colleagues to wish the NHS a Happy Birthday or share messages of thanks! More of these can be seen on our Twitter and Facebook pages.

Also sharing in the celebrations yesterday morning were parents Hannah and Joe Laycock, on the birth of their beautiful baby girl, Blossom. Born today on the 70th birthday of the NHS, at 10.52am, weighing 8lbs 2oz! Congratulations she is wonderful!

At lunch time, our Chief Executive, Louise Barnett and long-serving colleagues, Julie Allison, Senior Booking Clerk and Christina Oxer, Domestic Assistant (pictured below) represented the Trust at a special NHS70 Celebration Event at Westminster Abbey. They were joined by NHS colleagues from across the country including former NHS colleague Olive Belfield, a 1948 Nurse who spoke about her memories of working for the NHS.

Throughout the afternoon, both hospital and community colleagues have hosted NHS7Tea parties to celebrate NHS70 and raise funds for our Dr Ted's Children's Appeal! There was an amazing turn out and some wonderful cakes provided by colleagues, their families and ASDA – who very kindly supported our event with donations of cakes, balloons, stickers and more!  The Mayor and Mayoress of Rotherham, Cllr Alan and Sandra Buckley also attended this event, giving a special toast to the NHS and cutting the celebration cakes!

Thank you to everyone involved and to all who attended the event, you helped raise a fantastic £364.13 for the Dr Ted's Children's Appeal!
