Award success for Trust HR analytics

HPMA Awards 2018

The HR Systems and Compliance team at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust has won a prestigious national award at the Healthcare People Management Association (HPMA) Awards 2018.

The award, in the HR Analytics category, was in recognition of how the Trust has reduced non-medical agency spend by 28% as a result of utilising a range of workforce data.

Different areas of the Trust, which provides a range of hospital and community based care, had previously worked in isolation when planning staffing levels. The HR Systems and Compliance team recognised this could be more efficient and worked with colleagues across the Trust to pull together data on staffing levels, absence planning and requests for temporary staff, and now produces a weekly report.

The team have also set up a weekly workforce group with representatives from human resources, finance, nursing and operational colleagues. This has facilitated a Trust-wide overview and different areas to work together when it comes to maintaining safe staffing levels, maximising the use of our substantive contracted colleagues to help drive down costs and improve efficiency.

Danielle Petch, Associate Director of HR said: “This award recognises the outstanding success of our team. Over the last couple of years, they have worked extremely hard to improve the data held in the organisation to enable our operational teams to have a clear oversight of the staffing levels across the Trust. This has led to us better using our substantive staff to cover any leave or absence, reducing the need for non-medical agency staff. It is also fantastic to see that on the back of this success, other NHS organisations now want to work with us to learn more about our process and see if it, and our success, can be emulated elsewhere.”
