Help us change the lives of patients with your old ‘round pounds’

Raid your piggy banks, check your coat pockets and behind the sofa – the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity is appealing for your old £1 coins.

The traditional ‘round pound’ coins are now no longer considered legal tender after the Royal Mint introduced the new 12-sided versions on 28 March this year to help crack down on counterfeiting. About 1.2 billion of the old coins have so far been returned to the Treasury, but an estimated 500 million are still in circulation.

However, if you didn’t manage to spend all your coins before the deadline on 15 October, you can still donate them to the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity and help to make a difference to patients and their families.

Gabby Atmarow, Chair of the Charitable Funds Committee, said: “With millions of old £1 coins still potentially in circulation, now is the perfect time to search through your old money boxes, in your car’s glove compartment and spare handbags to see what vital funds you can help us to raise for the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity.

“We rely on the generosity of donors who care passionately about raising funds for the charity to help improve the care we provide for our patients, as well as their families

Donations can be made to the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity in person at the Charity Office, based on Floor D at Rotherham Hospital.

Alternatively, volunteers from The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust will accept old £1 coins at their charity book sales, held every Wednesday morning in reception at Rotherham hospital. You can also swap your old coins for Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity Christmas cards, which are also now being sold for £3.50 per pack or three for £10 every Monday to Wednesday mornings at Rotherham Hospital until mid-December.
