The teapot is brewing at the Carlton Park Hotel where celebrations will take place to mark the 71st anniversary of the NHS.
The Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity will be teaming up with the hotel, located just one mile from the hospital on Moorgate Road, Rotherham, to host an NHS Big Tea party on Thursday 4 July, from 11am to 1pm.
The event will be one of thousands of tea parties taking place across the country as the nation comes together to mark the milestone and raise money for NHS charities.
Jason Gossop, Sales Manager at Carlton Park, said he was inspired to host an NHS Big Tea event at the hotel following recent visits to the hospital’s Camerados teepee with his four-year-old son.
“My son Oliver suffered a burn to his hand in March so we became regular visitors to Rotherham Hospital’s Outpatients Department for treatment and check-ups. The teepee became a regular part of our visits and Oliver loved the comfy seats and fairy lights. It helped to transform what could have been a traumatic experience for him into something more positive.
“I loved the ethos of companionship and caring for others which Camerados promotes in an environment which provides solace and time out from our often busy lives. The idea of having public living rooms in the community inspired me to look for ways of opening up the hotel to more people too.
“The NHS Big Tea campaign is the perfect opportunity to welcome people from the surrounding community to the hotel who wouldn’t ordinarily pop in unless they were attending a meeting, wedding or an event.
“We hope the NHS Big Tea will be the first of many ‘open living room’ style events at Carlton Park and that we raise lots of money for our local hospital. It’s our way of giving something back to our local community and showing what camaraderie there is in our town.”
The NHS Big Tea campaign is led by NHS Charities Together, which is the National Association for NHS charities.
There are more than 250 NHS charities across the UK. Many of them focus on helping our hospitals do more, while others support mental health trusts, community health trusts and ambulance trusts.
In recent years, NHS charities have funded major capital projects, pioneering research and medical equipment, helping patients access the best possible care when they need it most. They also play a key role in mobilising volunteers to support NHS colleagues, brightening wards and waiting areas with colourful and engaging art, and building important links between our hospitals and our communities.
Barry Mellor, Chair of the Charitable Funds Committee, said: “When the NHS Big Tea campaign was launched to celebrate the NHS we appealed for individuals, community groups and local organisations to host tea parties in their home, community venues, at school or work. We’re really proud that the Carlton Park Hotel has pledged to support the campaign and to raise funds for their local hospital charity.”
An NHS Big Tea Party will also be held at Rotherham Hospital on Friday 5 July in the Rooftop Restaurant on A Level, from 1pm to 3pm. Patients and members of the public are invited to celebrate alongside colleagues from The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust.
