The Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity has received a major boost from Dr Ted’s biggest fans – the former Mayor and Mayoress of Rotherham.
Councillor Alan and Sandra Buckley chose to support the charity’s children’s appeal during their mayoral year in 2018/19. After a year of fundraising, the donations have been counted and total a magnificent £9,022.18.
Martin Havenhand, the Chairman of The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust, thanked Cllr Buckley for his dedicated fundraising at a special ceremony at Rotherham Town Hall on 15 August.
Cllr Buckley said: “My role as the Mayor of Rotherham was such an honour and our year in office had so many highlights. But we particularly enjoyed supporting our chosen charities.
“We chose the Dr Ted children’s appeal because we were keen to focus on smaller, local good causes and especially one which supports babies and children. Being in hospital is not a pleasant experience for anyone so it is wonderful to know that Dr Ted raises funds to provide home comforts and the added extras for Rotherham families during difficult times.
“We are really proud to say our legacy as the former Mayor and Mayoress includes boosting the charity with this donation. We’d like to thank everyone on the Fundraising Committee who helped to plan our calendar of events, the many businesses and organisations in the community who supported us and to everyone who donated.”
The Mayor raised a total of £27,066.54 for the Mayor’s Charity Appeal, which also included Headway Rotherham and the Fire Fighter’s Charity.
Cllr Buckley’s fundraising events during his mayoral year included bake sales and raffles with Dr Ted at Rotherham Hospital, a fashion show at The Centre in Brinsworth and a ball at the Carlton Park Hotel.
Mr Havenhand added: “We were so proud when the former Mayor and Mayoress announced they had chosen to support our Dr Ted children’s appeal in May 2018. We knew it would be an exciting year for the charity and we have certainly enjoyed fundraising together.
“We are incredibly grateful to Cllr Alan and Sandra Buckley for their donation but also for the platform they have given the charity to showcase the work we do. More people now know about the charity’s children’s appeal, which we hope will inspire others to support Dr Ted in the future.
“We will be working with our colleagues at the Trust to ensure the money raised is invested in resources, equipment or a project which is above and beyond what the NHS can provide and which will improve the experience some of our youngest patients and their families have during their hospital stay.”
The Dr Ted children’s appeal has raised £82,000 since it was set up in April 2012. Examples of what the appeal has funded include:
• An entertainer and magician to help make youngsters on the Children's Ward smile
• Games and sensory toys for the Children’s Ward, Children's Outpatients and the Urgent and Emergency Care Centre
• A child-friendly quiet saw to help remove plaster casts from broken bones
• Specially commissioned artwork to make the Special Care Baby Unit feel even more welcoming and homely
• A life-size Dr Ted mascot outfit.
