Sunflowers raise a smile for the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity

Green fingered gardeners of all ages have joined forces to sow the seeds for a new Purple Butterfly Room at Rotherham Hospital.

More than 100 youngsters from Eastwood Village Primary School in Rotherham have nurtured sunflower seeds into tiny individual shoots in collaboration with Rotherham In Root, a local community organisation which encourages people to grow their own vegetables, fruit and flowers.

The plants are now being sold by Rotherham In Root and volunteers from The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust to raise money for another Purple Butterfly Room at Rotherham Hospital. The rooms provide patients nearing the end of their lives, and their families, privacy, home comforts and help to maintain dignity when time is most precious.

The third plant sale was held earlier this month, raising £201.35 for Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity’s Purple Butterfly Appeal so far.

Volunteer Sally Moffett said: “We have some amazing green-fingered growers from across Rotherham, including children from Eastwood Village Primary School, nurturing seeds until they grow into tiny shoots to then sell and raise money for the Purple Butterfly Appeal. We’ve got a beautiful range of sunflower varieties on offer, from teddy bears to happy smiles!

“And they definitely raised some smiles at our latest plant sale in reception at Rotherham Hospital. We had a great deal of interest and support from patients, their families and colleagues at the Trust. We hope everyone enjoys caring for their new sunflowers this Spring and that they continue to inspire people to raise more money for the Purple Butterfly Appeal.”
Rotherham in Root will be returning to Rotherham Hospital on Thursday 27 April, from 10am to 2.30pm, with another bundle of sunflowers to sell in aid of the charity plus cucumbers, peppers, and chilli plants.

Volunteers are also being sought by Rotherham in Root to help sell sunflowers for the charity at the Garden Lovers Fair in Rotherham Town Centre on 29 April, from 10.30am to 3.30pm. Charity sunflowers can be purchased at the event, which is free to enter. Additional tickets for demonstrations from The One Show’s gardening presenter Christine Walkden cost an additional £5 (or £4 for concessions) and can be purchased from Rotherham Visitor Centre or by calling 01709 835904.
