Midwives and Maternity Support colleagues at the Trust held a series of events this week to celebrate International Day of the Midwife 2019.

The International Day of the Midwife was first launched by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) in 1992. 5 May is the internationally recognised day for highlighting the work of Midwives here in the UK and across the world. The theme this year was 'Midwives: Defenders of Women's Rights'.

As well as cakes and buns being provided to thank colleagues who are on duty on International Day of the Midwife (Sunday 5 May), Maternity Voices Partnership have arranged a Happiness Tombola with every Midwife given a chance to win a prize. Other events included Information stands in the main entrance at Rotherham Hospital and on Wharncliffe Ward and Greenoaks, with expectant mums completing “I love my midwife because …"

Supported by Lynne Galvin, Regional Officer, and Jayne Manderson, Local Officer, at the Royal College of Midwives (RCM), the Trust will today commit to the RCM's Caring for You charter. A launch event will take place at 1pm in the Megs Room (Old B10 Corridor), B-Level, where the Charter will be signed by the Head of Midwifery and pledges agreed.

In addition, this weekend Sky Lights are being installed on Delivery Suite which will create a wonderful and uplifting environment for our patients and colleagues.

June Lovett, Assistant Chief Nurse and Head of Midwifery Nursing and Professions, said: “All the celebrations have been fantastic and it is a real privilege and an honour to highlight the vital role that Midwives play in ensuring women and their new-borns in Rotherham navigate pregnancy and childbirth safely. I am extremely proud to work with such a fabulous team.

“The International Day of the Midwife provides a great opportunity to really acknowledge and appreciate all the wonderful care and support that our Midwives provide and to be an advocate for the woman, I would therefore like to say a huge personal thank you to all the Midwives and all our Midwifery colleagues – you are all amazing."

Our Midwives have also been sharing why they love what they do:

“I can be an advocate for families and empower them to achieve the birth experience they want."

“Nothing is as amazing as being able to look after women, babies and families at the most special time."

“It's such a privilege and I am so proud of the amazing team in Rotherham. "

Happy International Day of the Midwife to all midwifery colleagues at the Trust!
