Trust gathers to mark Baby Loss Awareness Week

Baby Loss Awareness Week

Colleagues and families across our Trust have come together to mark Baby Loss Awareness Week (9-15 October) and to show solidarity with families who have sadly lost babies.

Following a request from our Maternity Bereavement Lead Midwife, Shahida Mehrban, Meadowhall agreed to light up its roof and dome in blue to honour the week. Sands, the national still birth and neonatal death charity, has also added this significant achievement to their 'Pink and Blue Landmark Map' which will mark all buildings being lit up as part of this year's wave of light.

Colleagues from our maternity teams have supported the week by decorating windows in their department with pink and blue coverings – through which light shines, giving a striking visual sign of remembrance.

The Annual Memorial Service to remember babies took place in the Chapel at Rotherham Hospital on Saturday, 12 October 2019, followed by a balloon release. All were welcomed and the chaplaincy team encouraged families to submit names of individual babies to be remembered as part of the service. With the candles in the Chapel relit overnight on the 15 October as part of the global #WaveOfLight

As part of their support for Baby Loss Awareness Week, TRFT’s midwives hosted a bake sale and raised a fantastic £704.34!

All the funds raised at the Maternity Team’s Baby Loss Awareness Week event will boost the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity’s Purple Butterfly Appeal, which supports end of life care. Thank you to all those who made donations.

Mike Smith, Chair of the Charitable Funds Committee, said: “The response to the Maternity team’s event to mark Baby Loss Awareness week was incredible and we are grateful to the team for working together to raise awareness about baby loss in such a compassionate way and for their amazing fundraising efforts. Thank you to everyone from the team who organised the event, baked or bought to help boost the amount raised.”
