Rotherham midwives marked International Day of the Midwife (5 May) with special ‘meet the midwife’ event at Mamas & Papas.
Following the success of their first drop-in session for new mothers and pregnant ladies earlier this year, The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust’s Supervisor of Midwives team hosted the event at the Parkgate Shopping Centre store in Rotherham.
Supervisors of Midwives, along with the Nursing Times’ ‘Student Midwife of the Year’, Rosie Hotchin, spent the morning in Mamas & Papas answering questions and providing information and advice to the new mothers and fathers, pregnant ladies and those planning a family.
Rosie also made herself available to respond to pregnancy related questions via social media; answering the questions which are most common amongst pregnant ladies on the Trust’s Twitter and Facebook pages.
The Supervisor of Midwives team give support and guidance to new and expectant mothers, the public and other midwives working across the Trust, including services at Rotherham Hospital and those delivered in the community clinics and in patients’ homes. They also give advice on choices around birth such as where the birth will take place and the mum-to-be’s expectations. The team can also provide support after the baby is born in terms of talking about the experience.
Trudy Hutson, Supervisor of Midwives at the Trust, commented: “The main aim of the Supervisor of Midwives is to support women to make informed choices and to assist those who might have questions or need help with their preferred birth choices.
“It was lovely to meet the new mothers and pregnant ladies at Mamas & Papas and great talking to them about their care experiences. We actively encourage feedback from women and continue to try and raise awareness of the support we can provide.”
