Head and Neck Cancer Support Group Event

13 Oct 2011 09:56:51

The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust (TRFT) and Macmillan Cancer Support Services recently brought those with experiences of Head and Neck Cancer together at a specially created event.

The event, which took place on the 14 October at The Source, Meadowhall in Sheffield, welcomed more than 60 patients, carers, service providers and product suppliers all with a particular interest in the illness.

The aim of the day was to bring together support groups in South Yorkshire to share experiences, discuss issues such as benefits and prescriptions and to receive specialist information from Cancer experts including Macmillan cancer support services.

The support groups currently run independently and are made up of patients and carers of those diagnosed with throat, oral and Maxillo-facial cancers.

This is the first time the groups have been brought together and Judith Lunn, Head & Neck Clinical Nurse Specialist at TRFT, hopes that the relationships developed at the event will continue into the future. She commented: “This meeting was for patients to get their voices heard and we hope to run the event annually.

“It also provided an opportunity for patients to tell what we are doing right and wrong in order for us to improve services for the future”
