Specialised Diabetes weight-loss classes

22 May 2012 15:28:10

Diabetes weight-loss sessions in Rotherham are on the high road to success after participants have been able to significantly reduce their insulin doses.

After completion of recent specialised diabetes Reshape Rotherham classes, ran by The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust’s dietetics team, all participants in the group lost weight and were able to reduce the amount of insulin they needed.

Reshape classes have also recently began to host the Trust’s unique Cook and Eat Classes. The specialised diabetes group were one of the first Reshape classes to be offered Cook and Eat. Cook and Eat classes aim to support Reshape participants to improve the way they cook to make it healthier.

The total weight loss from the specialised diabetes group was 23.6 kg and total reduction in waist circumference loss averaged out at a tremendous 30cm. The total decrease in insulin was 165 units and the classes also enabled a patient to stop their gliclazide medication.

Sarah Groom, Reshape Course leader and Specialist Dietitian for Diabetes and Weight Management services, said: “On average we reduced each patient’s insulin by approximately 1/3, however for one particular patient we decreased her insulin by 38 units (86.4%) and her weight reduced by 8.4 kg (~19 lbs) which represents 10% weight loss, her waist circumference also decreased by 12cm (11%).

“We are very pleased with these results and hope this success will continue. We are looking forward to working with our colleagues to promote the Cook and Eat sessions and these have been thoroughly enjoyed so far by participants. ”

Each week Cook and Eat sessions give participants the tools to cook a healthy meal, learn all about healthy eating then sit down to eat the meals that have been made. All ingredients and equipment is provided, all participants need to do is turn up!

Cook and eat classes run for 2hrs on Monday nights (5-7pm) for a course of five weeks and are completely free for participants. Classes are held at a variety of locations across the borough. Cook and Eat courses can be attended by those on Reshape Rotherham Courses or those attending RIO or Morelife sessions.

Comments from those attending specialised diabetes Reshape meetings include:

“Great to get support from people with the same diabetic problems and losing weight.”

“Since coming to Reshape I am losing weight and reducing my insulin, plus met a nice set of girls.”

“My weight has reduced and understand more about the amount of insulin that is needed.”

“Reshape has helped to control my sugar levels and diet after losing weight.  Also a better understanding of diabetes.”

“I really like coming to Reshape diabetes classes. I have never in all the years I’ve had Diabetes had anyone teach me to understand this disease so I am grateful to the girls who do this job.  They have been really helpful and don’t make me feel stupid asking questions.  All in all I can say that I’ve enjoyed attending this group and will be sorry when it comes to an end.”
