Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Manager, Paula Lowson, is one of the first members of staff
at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust to create an Information Prescription for a patient.
Information Prescriptions are designed to give patients appropriate information when they need it. Patients can work alongside their medical professional to select information, some of which is in the form of video clips and extracts from more lengthy documents to help support patients throughout their illness.
Paula recently dealt with a patient and his wife who had just left clinic after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. The patient arrived at the health information point at Rotherham Hospital asking for more information.
Paula said: “He was looking through all the different booklets about prostate cancer and had chosen five of them that had bits of information in that he was interested in. I was keen to make sure that he received all the information he needed and Information Prescriptions enable us to give more bespoke and tailored advice and information.”
Paula talked through the specific information needs with the patient and then explained the concept of providing an Information Prescription and asked him if he would be willing to let her show him what was
As he and his wife looked through the sections online, guided by Paula, they picked out what they were interested in and she then created the prescription and printed it out for him. He realised that he didn’t need five booklets, but just his chosen sections. They also took the NHS Choices website address so they could browse for further information as and when required.
Paula said: “By providing tailored information to meet his needs the patient was able to focus on the issues that were important to him at that point in time therefore reducing the risk of him becoming confused or overloaded with information.”
