The Estates department at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust has won a Highly Commended
Award in The Environmental Business Award section of the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards 2012.
The team were one of five finalists and won the award for the introduction of the ‘Sharpsmart’ container system which is a reusable solution to help dispose of needles safely and securely. The new system is helping the Trust to reduce its carbon footprint by 1184 tons of carbon over a 10 year period and reduces its plastic consumption by 13 tons per year.
The previous system involved incineration, the new method has helped to reduce carbon from this process by 91% and cut disposal costs by £7000 per year.
The new system is also a lot safer for clinicians and patients as the Sharpsmart container, which is a completely sealed unit can be taken to the patient’s bedside to dispose of needles, which has further helped to reduce sharps injuries.
June Cadman Waste Management and Environmental Services Officer for the Trust said: “We are really pleased to receive this Environmental Business Award from the Barnsley and Rotherham Business Awards
2012. It is great that the Trust has been recognised for the implementation of environmental best practice. It also supports the Trusts sustainability and commitment to the environment by introducing new sustainable products and processes, reducing waste and saving costs that can be put back into healthcare.”
