The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust (TRFT) has teamed up with organisations across the borough to turn National Volunteers’ Week (1-7 June) into a whole month of celebrating volunteering in the town.
To mark this, throughout June TRFT and partners including Voluntary Action Rotherham (VAR) and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council (RMBC), will host a series of events for volunteers old and new.
To kick-start the month, an event took place on Tuesday 3 June at Rotherham Hospital to recruit volunteers and to provide information for those wanting to learn more about the wide variety of volunteering opportunities in Rotherham.
Joanne Farey, Volunteer Coordinator at TRFT, said: “The event showcased the wealth of volunteering opportunities available in our town; not only those in clinical settings in our hospital and community but those which involve volunteering outdoors or with other local organisations, for example.
“We’re extremely pleased that Rotherham has come together to celebrate volunteers for the entire month as it means we have even more time to mark the great work carried out by those who improve lives and make a difference through volunteering locally.”
Throughout June, TRFT will in particular seek volunteers interested in working with patients with symptoms linked to Dementia; such as cognitive problems caused by ill health and a combination of delirium, memory loss or frailty.
This role has been created especially following the recent launch of the Trust’s Forget-me-not Scheme, which promotes dementia awareness. Those interested will receive training to become a Dementia Buddy and, if successfully recruited, their role will enable them to work one-to-one with individuals, providing company and encouraging activities that maintain cognitive capability and a feeling of wellbeing.
The Trust is also looking for volunteers to help run a charity café at Park Rehabilitation Centre (PRC) on Badsley Moor Lane, where the proceeds will be donated to Rotherham Hospital Charity. The café is being created to provide refreshments for patients and visitors to the centre to further enhance their experience during their time at Therapy outpatient clinics and Hydrotherapy pool sessions. Volunteers at the café will help create a vibrant atmosphere within PRC for all.
Also taking place during Volunteers’ month is a Charity Book Sale and Tombola, hosted by TRFT Volunteers, which will too take place in Rotherham Hospitals’ main entrance. All funds raised will be donated to Rotherham Hospital Charity. This event will be held on Thursday 12 June from 10am to 2pm.
