'Rush to Walk' and the Rotary Club of Rotherham once again joined forces for the Rush Round Rotherham walk, raising £9,700 for the benefit of a number of Rotherham charities.
Over the last seven years 'Rush to Walk' has raised in excess of £100,000 for local charities. It was founded by Gillian Headon and Lynn Wilson in memory of Sandra Rush, who died of Breast Cancer in 2002. Co-founder, Lynn Wilson also sadly passed away from Cancer in 2012. This year's walk was in memory of a loyal and long standing volunteer, Dorothy Weir, who also sadly died from Cancer in 2013.
This year’s free-to-enter event took place in the magnificent setting of Wentworth Woodhouse, with walks through the beautiful surrounding countryside and the estate itself. The highlight of the event was the Rotherham Roundwalk, a 25-mile circuit through Parkgate, Wickersley and Whiston, over which Rotherham Rotary Club has staged a walk for the last thirty three years. With an alternative 7½ mile walk and a buggy-friendly three mile walk, there was something for everyone.
The Mayor of Rotherham, Cllr. John Foden and Mrs Foden attended the event at Wentworth Woodhouse to greet the 215 walkers before setting off on their walks. Thanks to event sponsors, Wentworth Woodhouse, and the support of everyone who helped to organise the event, the volunteers who supported on the day and everyone who took part, 100% of the £9,700 raised this year has been shared between a number of local charities including:
• Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice (£3250)
• Rotherham Hospital Charity (£3250)
• Rotherham Rotary Club Charities (£1750, which will be divided equally between Rotherham Looked after Children, Rotherham Samaritans, Rush House, Shiloh Rotherham and Yorkshire Air Ambulance)
• Rotherham Holiday Aid (£1250)
