Pedal power raises £770 for Hospital Charity

26 Apr 2017 12:20:13

Doctors, nurses and many other clinical and non-clinical colleagues from across The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust (TRFT) put their pedal power to the test by taking part in a Tour de Yorkshire inspired Spin-a-Thon, raising £770 for the Rotherham Hospital and Community Charity.

The event, led by the Trust’s Wellness Matters team, not only to raised much needed funds for the Trust’s charity, but also aimed to inspire colleagues to take up exercise and sporty activities to help boost their health, fitness and wellbeing.

Colleagues gave up 30 minutes or an hour of their time to support the event from 8am on Thursday 20 April to 5pm on Friday 21 April. More than 80 colleagues took part and together cycled the equivalent of the route of the Tour de Yorkshire.

Cheryl Clements, Executive Director of Workforce at TRFT, said: “We’ve been delighted with the response to the Spin-a-Thon. People from all across the Trust stepped up to have a spin on the bike. There was a fantastic atmosphere and friendly camaraderie during the two-day event. It really demonstrated why we are known as ‘the really friendly trust’ because everyone is just hugely enthusiastic and happy to join in.

“I cycled alongside Mark Buckley, Professional Lead for Clinical Radiology, Medical Physics and Medical Photography/Illustration, and the support we received from colleagues and the public was amazing. Thank you to all our colleagues, patients and their visitors who cheered us on and took part.

“With the Tour de Yorkshire coming to the region, we really wanted to inspire our colleagues to get fit and healthy and to think about their overall wellbeing. We also wanted to showcase some of the amazing benefits of our Wellness Matters scheme.”

Helen Green, Head of Nursing (Operations) at TRFT, added: “It’s great that the Trust reminds us to take care of our own health and wellbeing and provides opportunities to do so. We spend a lot of time looking after patients so it’s easy to forget about ourselves. The Spin-a-Thon gave us a chance to do both and was immense fun with fantastic support from colleagues and patients.”

A big thank you from the Trust's Wellbeing Team to everyone taking part in the Wellness Matters activities and to everyone who supported our colleagues and donated to the Trust charity!
