Counselling Services

Counselling is not the same as giving advice. A counsellor helps you to understand more clearly the issues that concern you. They respect your values, choices and lifestyle.

Counselling provides a space where you are able to acknowledge the problems you are dealing with. In a non-judgemental way, the counsellors will seek to help you overcome your fears and learn new ways to manage, giving you the courage and strength to challenge the difficulties in a safe environment where you can feel supported and encouraged. Very often it can be helpful to talk to someone who is not involved in the situation and you can see things in a different way, which can often also be really helpful. Our counsellors are used to dealing with these issues so you can be sure that you have the correct support in place.

Patients come to us for a variety of reasons. Whilst not an exhaustive list, some of these include;

  • Losing a pregnancy through miscarriage, stillbirth or termination
  • Difficulties during pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period
  • Maternal Mental Health
  • Potential Foetal Abnormalities
  • Substance misuse
  • Social issues
  • Early pregnancy and fertility problems
  • Pre-conceptual anxieties
  • Pre or post-surgery anxieties
  • Menopause
  • Sexual assault or abuse
  • Endocrine and Colposcopy

Rotherham Maternity Services also has an afterthoughts service where women can come and discuss their experiences with a team of midwives.

Women are referred to the services above by their healthcare professional. Please speak to your midwife, health visitor or GP for more information.
