Our Continuity of Carer Teams

In Rotherham, we have three Continuity of Carer teams with a fourth team starting in late 2021.

Continuity of Carer is the future vision for Maternity Services throughout England that has emerged from the ‘Better Births’ report.

The Continuity of Carer model is known to improve health outcomes for mums and babies and give greater satisfaction to both the mum and Midwife. Growing evidence suggests that women who receive Continuity of Carer are more likely to go into labour naturally, less likely to have any interventions during labour and more likely to have a positive birth experience.

If you are registered at a Rotherham GP surgery under a Continuity of Carer team, you will be offered to be part of this small Midwifery team who will follow you throughout your pregnancy journey, support you in labour and birth, and visit you and your baby at home in the postnatal period.

You will be allocated a Named Midwife who will be your main caregiver, but may have care provided by other members of the team throughout your pregnancy journey.

If your GP surgery isn’t yet part of the Continuity of Carer model, don’t worry as there are plans in place to offer this to all women in Rotherham.
