Pulmonary rehab returns to the class

Pulmonary rehab class Breathing Space

The Trust’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Team at Breathing Space has worked throughout the pandemic to help patients across Rotherham manage their conditions.

The team are delighted to be now offering face-to-face sessions again at the site’s modern, multi-purpose gym on Badsley Moor Lane.

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a programme of exercise and education delivered by various health professionals for people with chronic lung conditions who experience symptoms of breathlessness.

Last month the team celebrated Pulmonary Rehabilitation Awareness Week (21-27 June) with service users who have benefitted from the sessions.

Due to COVID-19, classes were moved online to protect participants, however, now that the regulations have changed, the team have been able to welcome people back to class.

Melissa Peters, Specialist Physiotherapist, said: “We have worked through the entire pandemic offering virtual telephone home-based PR sessions to patients. As we restarted pulmonary rehab face to face we listened to what our patient needs and thoughts were around COVID safety.

“We installed large screens between each patient pod with over two metres distance, thus ensuring patient safety and wellbeing.

“We have seen such a positive change in the patients who have been attending, not only in their confidence but mental health too. The whole team at Breathing Space are involved in delivering a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach to our education component and offering further support when identified or requested.”

Patients have called the classes “very enlightening” and are happy to be back in class.

Scott Archer said: “I would just like to thank the staff at Breathing Space from nurses to students for all their hard work and effort to try and make all patients in everyday activities more manageable. The treatment has made a big difference in my lifestyle to make every task more bearable. Thanks to all staff.”

David Wilkinson said: “Since joining the Breathing Space rehabilitation classes just two weeks ago I have seen a significant improvement in my COPD and fitness levels. The classes are challenging whilst enjoyable. The staff are excellent and after the class talks are very enlightening. Would highly recommend.”

Clyna Downes said: “As well as enjoying the outing, talking to the staff (who are helpful if you are unsure) I have generally felt stronger and am motivated to be active the rest of my week. I really enjoy it.”

Melissa added: “As a team we have really enjoyed being back in the gym, despite all the changes due to COVID. We have learnt so much from this experience and developed the service to include the virtual home PR options for patients that have other commitments or at present feel this option is best for them. We look forward to expanding the class sizes and session available as soon as safely possible.”
