Welcome to the Orthotics Department

The Orthotic service provides a comprehensive assessment and treatment pathway for those referred to us by consultants and GPs; both as inpatients and outpatients.

We treat and rehabilitate patients by providing orthoses to aid movement, correct deformity, help heal injuries and relieve pain and discomfort

Where are we located?

Our department can be found at Junction 3, Level C of Rotherham Hospital.

This is on the same floor as the main entrance near physiotherapy and occupational therapy. The service's outpatient clinics are held here.

Who do we see?

We see and treat patients of all ages from all clinical areas including:

The service provides a wide range of orthotic devices including footwear, functional foot orthoses, insoles, ankle foot orthoses (AFOs), KAFOs (full length callipers), upper limb, spinal, head & neck, abdominal supports and hosiery.

The Orthotic Department also facilitates the supply of NHS wigs to those who require them; patients are seen at NHS approved suppliers by a professional hairdresser trained in Wig provision.

Referrals

The service accepts referrals from all clinical specialties within the Acute Trust and has operated a successful GP direct access protocol for the past 20-years.
We also accept referrals from out of area GPs and from consultants from other trusts nationally.

Consultants - can refer directly to orthotics for both inpatients and outpatients using the Orthotic Referral Form which can be found on the Hub or below. You can fill this in electronically and email or drop this into the department
Other Department staff can referrer on behalf of a consultant with permission

GP’s - General Practitioners can refer directly to orthotics via choose & book, or via direct letter or email to the department. Patients may also be seen in Orthotics if they are referred via the MSK pathway.

Prescription Charges

At the Orthotics Department we can assess for and provide one of several devices that are subject to a NHS prescription charge.

Goods that are subject to a prescription charge are:

  • Compression hosiery – Standard prescription rate, paid per stocking
  • Fabric supports – Higher Prescription rate, paid per support
  • Wigs – Wig rate, variable depending on type

If you are attending the department to be assessed for a device which carries a prescription charge this will be indicated on your initial appointment letter.

Current prescription charges can be found on the NHS website and payment can be taken in cash, cheque (made payable to R.F.T NHS Trust) or via card.

If you are exempt from the prescription charge, we ask you bring your exemption details to your appointment. If you are unsure if you are exempt please use this exemption checker

If you require multiple prescriptions you may be better off with a prescription pre-payment certificate (PPC), For more information about these see the NHS Business Website
