For all of the surgical specialities offered by the Rotherham NHS
Foundation Trust (Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT), General surgery, Gynaecological, Oral
and maxillofacial surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedic or Urology surgery) there
are many procedures that can be done as a day case. You will be admitted to our
Day Surgery Centre and be discharged the same day. We offer a comfortable area
away from the main hospital with dedicated day surgery staff where you can have
your surgery and return home to recover fully in the comfort of your own home.
The majority of patients are discharged on the same day; there is a
small percentage (approx 1- 2%) that may need to be transferred to an inpatient
bed to stay in overnight.
Pre-operative preparation and booking your surgery
You will be seen in the outpatients department and advised if you need
surgery. Next, you’ll be asked to attend a pre-operative assessment appointment
where a nurse will assess your medical health and arrange any investigations to
ensure you are ready for surgery. Sometimes giving you a date for surgery may
need to be delayed if you need further investigations or you have a health
condition that could be improved e.g poorly controlled diabetes. You will be
given information to prepare for your surgery including starvation and self
isolation guidance and a telephone number so that if there are any changes in
your health or circumstances, you can get in touch and discuss this with us.
Once the pre-assessment nurse has said you are “fit for surgery” then
the surgical team will be informed. A scheduler will contact with you a date
for surgery, remind you of self isolation guidance. You will need to attend for
a Covid-19 swab 72 hours before surgery and self isolate from the time you have
your Covid-19 swab.
The day before surgery you will receive a pre-op phone call to remind
you when and where to attend, starvation guidance, check you are still well and
have isolated appropriately.
