Microbiology

The Microbiology Department offers a comprehensive routine and emergency range of diagnostic services which together with its partner laboratory at Barnsley covers all aspects of routine Microbiology including bacteriology, parasitology, mycology, molecular diagnostics and serology.

Clinical advice can be obtained from the Consultant Microbiologist or Associate Specialist and technical advice can be obtained from the Biomedical Scientists in the department.

The Microbiology Biomedical Scientist on-call can be contacted via the hospital switchboard 01709 820000.

The Microbiology Medical staff provide an on-call service out of hours and are contactable via the hospital switchboard 01709 820000.

How to collect a faeces sample

Your GP or another healthcare professional, such as a nurse, will have given you a plastic (specimen) container and should have explained how to collect the stool / faeces sample. Visit the NHS website for information on how to collect a faeces sample.
