The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust wins prestigious Developing Workforce Award
Trust wins prize at Royal College of Physicians’ Excellence in Patient Care Awards on Thursday 10 July.

The Royal College of Physicians Excellence in Patient Care Awards recognise and celebrate the work of its members and fellows to improve patient care through education, policy, clinical practice and research.
The Trust won in the Developing Workforce Award category, which looked to celebrate work on “innovative ideas to improve a teams or groups of physicians working and development”. The work shortlisted was a three-year project, led by Dr Matthew Roycroft, around improving resident doctor experience within Care Group 1. On the night, the project was described as “[an] outstanding project, [which] demonstrated impressive, scalable outcomes by enhancing doctor experience and productivity.”
To deliver the improved experience, colleagues across the organisation worked together to deliver positive changes. These included improvements to resident doctor (previously known as junior doctors) wellbeing, rota design, staffing levels and patient care.
The project was a collaboration between colleagues from the Care Group 1 Medicine Senior Leadership, Medical Workforce, Finance and Education teams. Colleagues whose efforts were recognised on the night included Paul Stewart, Dr Jeremy Reynard, Nicola Colley, Karen Backhouse, Anisa Ali, Joanne Freeman, Abigail Fairhurst, Kerry Gedney and Alison Beard.
Paul Stewart is the General Manager for Care Group 1. He collected the award on the night: “For the team, winning this award is validation. There’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes at the NHS. I think the true collaboration in this project has been absolutely brilliant across all the teams.”
Dr Matthew Roycroft added: “Winning this award is really a testament to the hard work of numerous department to help achieve this. Well done to everyone from the Care Group 1 Medicine Senior Leadership, Medical Workforce, Finance and Education teams.”
The Trust’s Medical Director, Dr Jo Beahan, commented: “This project has been an impressive collaboration between lots of our colleagues. It’s a great example of our Trust’s values – ambitious, caring and together – and how they can be put into practice to benefit each other and our patients.
“We’re delighted to see the improvements it has made recognised by the RCP choosing us to win with this award.”
