Helping children and young people in Rotherham get healthy

Helping children and young people in Rotherham get healthy

Information for parents or carers
Children and Young People's Health Services

Why is it important for children and young people to keep a healthy weight?

Being overweight can be harmful for your child’s health now and in the future. Overweight children are much more likely to become overweight adults, putting them at increased risk of a range of health problems; including high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke.

What is a healthy weight?

A healthy weight for a child can depend on many factors, including height, age, sex and lifestyle.

What can I do to help a child or young person get to a healthy weight?

You can support a child or young person to achieve a healthier weight by encouraging healthier food choices and a variety of fun ways to exercise.

The NHS Better Health website offers a lot of useful advice, including healthy recipes and activities.

What support is available to help me do this?

We have collected some useful resources that may help you to support your child and family.

The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust has had no involvement in the set-up of these groups and cannot recommend their use, but other parents and children have found them useful.
